Alleys are a unique and underutilized part of the city. From Seattle to San Francisco to Chicago, these areas of the city are new spaces for creative development. Their range of characteristics from beneficial zoning attributes to their size and scale that make them fertile ground for new ideas and neighborhood projects.
We’ve experienced two uniquely different ways of building on (or across) alleys in Portland, Oregon. In two of our projects—One North and B3—the alley space was used in different ways, but in both cases spurring unique design and development.
With One North, a 100,000 square foot commercial project, the alleyway dividing three commercial buildings was incorporated into a shared 14,000 square foot
